What is Copyright?

Every original creative work (including photographs, illustrations and writing) belongs to the person that brought it into being. Copyright means that the creator of the work has the sole Right to Copy the work, and the right to restrict the copying of the work. Essentially, the creator of the item has the right to say how and where their creation is used.

See the following articles for more detailed explanation of copyright laws:
"Copyright Guide for Photographers" from American Society of Media Photographers, Inc. posted on the Electronic Frontiers Foundation Intellectual Property archive.
Copyright Basics article from the US Copyright Office.
The Canadian Copyright Act from Copyright Board Canada and the FAQ page of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

In general, copying, re-publishing or modifying a creative work without prior consent of the copyright owner is a breach of copyright law.
