Tip: Searching for Roses

When you are searching for a rose, less is more. You don't have to spell out the entire name - the database will search on a partial name. So choose just the most relevant word in the rose's name. Also, spelling counts, so just type in enough of the name to narrow your search down - example:

You're looking for Pinocchio.

  • If you type in "Pinnochio" or "Pinn" and click search, you won't find anything, because you have an incorrect spelling.

  • If you type in "Pino" and click search, you'll find 3 roses, Red, Lavender and Yellow Pinocchio.

  • If you type in "Pin" and search, you'll get over 100 roses, including every rose that has Pink in it's name!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I had some beautiful roses in my wedding bouquet - where can I find them for my garden?

A: Florists roses are often (but not always) bred especially for greenhouse and/or hydroponic growing and for forcing those perfectly formed buds on long stems. These varieties are often not available for purchase, and may not make the best garden roses, as they have not been bred for bush shape, weather resistance, hardiness and the varying conditions in gardens. In the EveryRose Browse, there is a list of florists varieties, and "Florist Variety" now appears on the rose detail page for those roses. It doesn't mean that a florist's variety will never work in the garden - some, like Bridal Pink and Bridal White are happy outdoors - it just means that you'll need to do a bit more homework and check with suppliers to make sure that the rose you're thinking of is suitable for your conditions.

Q: How come I can't find the rose named 'X'?

A: It may be that we haven't got to that rose to research and enter it into the database yet. Or, it may be that the name you know it as is a local name and that the same rose is sold under different names in other parts of the world. We have tried to list all variants of a rose's name - when you search by name it searches both the primary name and the variant names. In any case, send us an email with as much information as you know about the rose, including the names of any books or catalogues you see it reference in.

Q: How come you haven't replied to my email?

A: Two possible reasons:
1) You don't have your Email program set up properly, and your return address is invalid: we can't reply if you don't give us a workable address.

2) You have asked a question which we can't answer

  • If you are looking for sources for roses, first look on the rose's detail page to see if a supplier is listed under "Available From". If there isn't a supplier listed there, go to the Rose Sources list and look for a supplier in your area or a mail order source that you can contact. We can't answer which of your local nurseries stocks a particular rose.

  • If you are looking for cultural information on roses, check out Rose Links for many, many Web sites with how-to information and frequently asked questions on rose culture.

Q: How come you list "SuperDuper" as 4 foot tall and dark pink, but my SuperDuper is 6 feet tall and red?

A: Lots of reasons:

  • Your SuperDuper may not be SuperDuper at all, but another rose sold under the wrong name. It happens more often than we'd guess. Also, due to patents and licenses or just plain marketing, the same rose may be sold with different names in different areas.

  • There may be more than one rose named SuperDuper. We have put notes about roses with the same name under Also Known As... whenever we have found them.

  • Your rose may have reverted to the characteristics of its parent(s), especially if it is a sport rather than a hybrid.

  • Color is a matter of opinion, especially with roses - one person's dark pink can be another's light red. To make things more difficult, the same rose can have different colors depending on the time of year, the climate, the nutrients in the soil, the age of the rose, placement in sun vs. shade, and many other factors.

  • Growth habit, hardiness and vigor are also greatly affected by soil, climate, position, shelter, training, pruning, disease and the quality of the original rootstock and/or scion.

  • Our data is compiled from many sources - sometimes the references conflict and we have to choose between them. So, our data can be considered an Average, from which individual roses can vary to a greater or lesser degree.

  • After all of the above is considered, there is still a possibility... We might have goofed. If you think we have made an error, please let us know (politely). Because of the variability that we have noted above, please provide us with some references along with your correction, where we can cross-check the published sources.
